AMARGOSA
The Modern Pioneers of the Amargosa Valley -

Kindle - Epub - PDF - Word

The Amargosa Valley in southern Nye County, Nevada, did not yield easily to human habitation. Although it is not as famous (or notorious) as Death Valley, its immediate neighbor to the west, the Amargosa is formidable enough. Indians lived in the valley when the first Europeans arrived in the middle of the nineteenth century. Since then desperados and gunfighters, prospectors and miners, freighters and railroaders, farmers and ranchers, and most recently community builders have added their chapters to the valley's history.

A History of Amargosa Valley Nevada

Early explorers were followed by prospectors and miners. Settlers who saw the possibilities for agriculture and ranching in the region were not far behind them. The Ash Meadows area, a true desert oasis, was the home of many people, including early community builder "Dad" Fairbanks and some of dubious reputation, such as the legendary desert frontiersman Jack Longstreet. Discovery of borax, clay deposits, and marble and the arrival of the railroads brought new opportunity to the valley's residents around the turn of the century.

TONOPAH
Tonopah, The Greatest, The Richest, The Best.......

Kindle - Epub - PDF - Word

Tonopah and the mining communities that it spawned in southern Nevada represent the last flowering of the Old West in America. In the Old West, the discovery of precious metals and ranching combined with individualism and the lure of wealth and adventure to create communities immortalized in song and lore because they symbolize the core American values of personal freedom and opportunities for self-betterment. Perhaps more than almost any place in the country, much of the Old West still survives in the Tonopah region.

TONOPAH
A History of Tonopah

Kindle - Epub - PDF - Word - Rich Text - Plain Text

The rich silver ore in Tonopah literally stuck out of the ground, and thousands flocked to the area. The town boomed. But companies dominated by wealthy Eastern capitalists controlled the mining; they were in mining for the money and generally cared neither for the town nor the miners. They took what they could and left, pirating away the wealth that the hills once concealed, leaving the town to survive on its own. - And survive it did: through the end of the era of the underground miner to the time of nuclear testing and modern-day defense related activities. The spirit of the Old West, embodied in its inhabitants' sense of adventure and their love of personal freedom, still exists in Tonopah.

In writing her thesis, Lucile Berg drew upon three essential sources of historical information: existing published works, old local newspapers, and interview with individuals having firsthand knowledge of the area's vigorous past. Her thesis is a classic that remains to this day the best general source on the history of central Nevada up to 1942. Now, in this volume, it will become more accessible and widely appreciated for generations to come.
